Kansas Athletics, fans raise $100K for Haiti

At halftime of the Kansas game against Baylor Jan. 20, Kansas Athletics presented a $100,000 check to the American Red Cross for the relief effort in earthquake-stricken Haiti. Athletics Director Lew Perkins presented the check to Jane Blocher, executive director of the Douglas County Chapter of the American Red Cross.

KU fans donated cash at the men's and women's basketball games at Allen Field House last weekend. Fans also contributed online at kuathletics.com between Jan. 16-20. Those efforts netted nearly $50,000. Kansas Athletics, Perkins, Bill Self and Bonnie Henrickson all matched a portion of the donations to bring the total to $100,000.

"We are very pleased to make this donation in the name of our coaches, student-athletes, administrators and fans" Perkins said. "Everyone involved with this effort should be very proud. They have proven yet again the immense generosity of the Kansas spirit. Together, Jayhawk Nation has made an important, positive contribution to the lives of many suffering people."

A look into the 2009-'10 KU basketball season thus far

The Jayhawks…

…own a 17-1 record this season, including 3-0 in conference play. This marks the fourth-straight year that KU has won its first three Big 12 games.

…have won 53 straight games in Allen Field House, the nation's longest home court winning streak and third best in school history. KU is 645-106 all-time in the building, including 107-6 under Bill Self.

…have 200 all-time wins against Big 12 competition since the league's inception in 1996-’97. The Jayhawks are the first team in the league to amass 200 victories in conference play.

…are just 13 wins away from 2,000 overall victories.

Player notables

In three Big 12 games this season, Marcus Morris has shot 22-for-29 (75.8 percent), and is averaging 20.3 points per game. His eight field goals Jan. 20 were a career high.

Pink Zone women's basketball game Feb. 7

Kansas women's basketball and Kansas Athletics will work to raise awareness and funds for the fight against breast cancer when it takes part in the Women's Basketball Coaches Association's (WBCA) "Pink Zone" initiative on Sunday, Feb. 7. Kansas will play host to rival Kansas State at 1 p.m. in a game that will see the Jayhawks dress in pink and blue uniforms in an effort to raise breast cancer awareness.

The "Pink Zone" initiative is a global, unified effort to assist in raising breast cancer awareness on the court, across campuses, in communities and beyond. In just its third year, the initiative has grown to 1,500 participating schools nationwide.

Kansas Athletics will donate $1 for every fan in attendance with the money being divided between Lawrence Memorial Hospital and the University of Kansas Cancer Center. The donations will go toward supporting breast cancer treatment and research. In addition, the first 5,000 fans in attendance will receive a free pink T-shirt courtesy of Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

Kansas Athletics donated $6,122 in 2008 as the Jayhawks defeated Nebraska. Last season, in front of a crowd of 7,069 the Jayhawks defeated Iowa State while raising over $7,500.

Tickets for the 2010 Pink Zone game may be purchased in person at the Allen Field House ticket office, over the phone at 800-34-HAWKS or online at www.kuathletics.com.
