As far as career highlights go, Chris Martin thinks it’s tough to top an Emmy. The 2003 University of Kansas film graduate, along with his colleagues, picked up one of those coveted golden statues last week for outstanding special effects work on the television series “Heroes.” Read more.
This Week In KU History
September 27, 1896: By the end of the autumn of 1896, crimson and blue had become the University’s official athletic colors. Since they happened to be the combined colors of Harvard and Yale, a myth arose that crimson and blue were chosen to assuage the Yale alums among KU’s faculty who had endured a difficult time embracing the hues of their alma mater’s chief rival. College alumni named to 'most powerful women' list
Sheila Bair, Cynthia Carroll and Kathleen Sebelius all earned degrees from the KU College of Liberal Arts & Sciences. Bair also is a recipient of the CLAS Alumni Distinguished Achievement Award.

Graduate programs maintain top rankings
Degrees in public administration, textiles, speech-language-pathology, metalsmithing and jewelry, psychology, theatre, history, political science and biological sciences were all among the top 30 graduate programs at public universities, according to recent U.S. News & World Report rankings.

Outstanding faculty recognized with Kemper awards
Of the 16 Kemper Fellowships for Teaching Excellence handed out at the Lawrence campus, 14 went to faculty in the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences and the School of the Arts.

English professors receive National Endowment for the Humanities grants
KU received two of the three NEH grants recently awarded to projects in Kansas. Maryemma Graham, professor, received a $200,000 grant to conduct a two-week institute on “Native Son” author Richard Wright for 30 secondary school teachers. Janet Sharistanian, associate professor, earned a $139,654 grant for a five-week seminar on the United States and World War I for 16 elementary and secondary teachers.

Clinical Child Psychology program honored for minority recruitment, retention efforts
The American Psychological Association presented the Richard M. Suinn Minority Achievement Award to the program. KU’s program averages between 33 and 38 percent ethnic minority students, far above the 1 percent of professionals working in the field who are ethnic minorities.

U.S. News & World Report lists KU School of Business in the top 30
The KU School of Business undergraduate program advanced to 28th in the country among public institutions, according to recent U.S. News & World Report rankings.

School of Business Masters of Accounting students participated in service activities benefitting the Lawrence Community.

Applied Portfolio Management tournament proceeds find new home
Proceeds from this year’s APM golf tournament will go to fund student employment at the School of Business.

Celebrate Homecoming with the KU School of Business
It’s going to be another great year for the Jayhawks! The School of Business will honor alumni classes that are celebrating five-year increment anniversaries (classes of 1929, ’34, ’39, ’44, ’49, ’54, ’59, ’64, ’69, ’74, ’79, ’84, ’89, ’94, ’99, ’04 and ’09) at its Fall 2009 Class Reunion and Homecoming Celebration.

Students get hands-on experience in KU’s Internal Audit Department
Four business students have been selected as interns this semester in the KU Internal Audit department. School of Business interns are: Jordan Bates, Masters of Accounting student and May 2009 graduate in accounting, from Hoisington, Kan.; Diana Durand, senior in accounting, from Lima, Peru; Israel Interiano, Masters of Accounting student and May 2008 graduate in accounting, from Wichita; and Sam Zerger, Masters of Accounting student and May 2009 graduate in accounting, from Wichita.

KU law school named ‘best value’
in National Jurist magazine ranking

The school ranked No. 21 out of 65 schools that the magazine says “carry a low price tag and are able to prepare their students incredibly well for today’s competitive job market.”

Noted scholar on financial markets, globalization joins KU Law as visiting professor
David A. “Bert” Westbrook, professor of law and Floyd H. & Hilda L. Hurst Faculty Scholar at the University at Buffalo Law School at the State University of New York, is teaching Contracts this fall. His latest book, “Out of Crisis: Rethinking our Financial Markets,” is due out next month from Paradigm Publishers.

KU law professor testifies on arbitration before congressional subcommittee
University of Kansas law professor Stephen J. Ware testified before Congress last week during a hearing on “Mandatory Binding Arbitration: Is it Fair and Voluntary?”
