Spring brings KU football, hoops news

Senior quarterback Todd Reesing engineered three scoring drives to lead the Blue Team to a 20-7 victory against the White Team at the Kansas football Spring Game on a sunny Saturday afternoon at Kivisto Field at Memorial Stadium on April 11.

A crowd of about 17,000 saw Reesing complete his first seven passes on the afternoon and leFootballad the Blue Team to scores on its first three possessions. Reesing’s favorite target on the afternoon was junior Jonathan Wilson, who caught six passes for 101 yards and one touchdown in the first half, Reesing’s only time on the field for the day. Reesing went 16-for-22 for 221 yards and one touchdown. Wilson ended the day with seven catches for 133 yards and one score.

Defensively, senior linebacker Jake Schermer ended the day with eight tackles, including seven solo stops for the Blue Team. Safety Chris Harris had six stops and one sack for the scrimmage. Freshman Greg Brown paced the White Team with eight tackles, while freshman Lubbock Smith had six stops.

The Jayhawks open the 2009 season against Northern Colorado on Saturday, Sept. 5, on Kivisto Field at Memorial Stadium. KU will play six home games this year, including contests against Big 12 foes Iowa State, Oklahoma and Nebraska. KU will once again conclude its regular season against Border Showdown rival Missouri Nov. 28 at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, Mo.

Season tickets are now on sale for $300. The Perkins Restaurant Family Plan, which includes two youth and two adult general admission tickets, is $450, and the new Crimson Zone—a reserved seat in Section 1 or 2—is available for just $225. Click here to purchase season tickets online.

Cole Aldrich and Sherron Collins to return for another season at KU

In addition to sharing the Danny Manning "Mr. Jayhawk" Award at the 2008-’09 KU men's basketball banquet, the Jayhawk duo of Sherron Collins and Cole Aldrich announced before a capacity crowd of more than 600 that they would return for the 2009-’10 season.

"I can't wait for next year when we try to go for one more," Aldrich said, showing the crowd his 2008 national championship ring.

"Like Cole said, I will be back next year to try and win another national championship," Collins said to a standing ovation.

Following a welcome from Director of Athletics Lew Perkins, dinner and a highlight video, coach Bill Self recognized Jayhawk seniors Brennan Bechard and Matt Kleinmann.

Self then presented Collins and Aldrich with the Danny Manning "Mr. Jayhawk" Award as chosen by their teammates and basketball staff. In their acceptance speech, each confirmed they would stay for the 2009-’10 season. Many prognosticators have selected KU, which went 27-8 and advanced to the Sweet 16 in 2008-’09, as a top-five team nationally should Collins and Aldrich return. ESPN's Dick Vitale has named Kansas as his No. 1 team entering next season.

"Cole and Sherron had an opportunity to go and do some things right now," Self said. "And how much do they love this place. FootballCole said if I can wait one more year, I can get so close to getting my degree and graduate from Kansas and have the time of my life. And here is Sherron who will come back for his fourth year and he will graduate because he needs only 20 hours after this year, have a chance to be an All-American and have the chance to do what they both want to do, be part of a legacy that brings home two national championships."
