Former President George H.W. Bush answered questions on topics ranging from the first Gulf War to the possibility of a third President Bush at the Lied Center of Kansas on Nov. 16. Bush was on campus to accept the 2008 Dole Leadership Prize from the Dole Institute of Politics.
The former president answered questions from Bill Lacy, director of the Dole Institute, as well as questions sent in by the public and read by members of the institute’s Student Advisory Board. He said he did not expect another person with the last name of Bush to take residence in the White House, but did mention his son Jeb, the former governor of Florida, and grandson George P. Bush.
Bush also treated the audience to his own impression of comedian Dana Carvey’s impression of Bush: “Not gonna do it. Wouldn’t be prudent.”
Bush is the third president to visit the Dole Institute. President Bill Clinton was at the institute in 2004 and delivered the inaugural Robert J. Dole Lecture. Former President Jimmy Carter also attended ceremonies celebrating the opening of the institute.
The Dole Institute of Politics is a bipartisan institute dedicated to promoting public service, civic engagement and politics. It is located on KU’s west campus next to the Lied Center.
