MBA Essentials offers new tools to get ahead

Business executives hoping to build their teams and professionals seeking new skills to get ahead may begin enrolling in the 2008 KU MBA Essentials Program. This 13-session management education program teaches critical business skills on Monday evenings from Sept. 8 through Dec. 1 at the KU Edwards Campus in Overland Park, Kan.

The KU MBA Essentials Program delivers valuable lessons to business managers and owners. Real-world solutions taught by KU business faculty include filling gaps in strategic positions, effective performance evaluation, building breakthrough marketing strategies and evaluating financial performance.

To enroll in the 2008 KU MBA Essentials Program, visit www.business.ku.edu/mbaessentials or call 785.864.1499. Organizations that wish to enroll more than one employee receive a 10 percent discount on additional participants.

Class of 2008 breaks records, lands jobs across the U.S.

A record-setting class of 325 undergraduate students earned their degrees from the KU School of Business this May. These undergraduates were accompanied by 105 master’s degree students and three Ph.D. students to make up one of the largest graduating classes in the history of the school.

Preliminary data show that our graduates with bachelor’s degrees will enter the job market with an average salary of $45,000. Master’s and MBA graduates accepted salaries ranging from $45,000 to $67,000. Our students have taken positions across the U.S. with companies including Deloitte, KPMG, Sabre Holdings, Procter & Gamble, Citigroup and Ernst & Young.

“Despite the tough economy and job market, these numbers show that our students are gaining the skills they need to start a successful career,” School of Business Dean William L. Fuerst said. “Our record-setting number of graduates also proves that students are taking advantage of the new majors and courses offered by the school.”

To stay competitive in the changing business world and better serve our students, the KU School of Business added faculty, staff and a new Supply Chain Management major during the last school year.

Students experience China’s growing economic power

Eleven KU graduate students learned firsthand why China is one of the most dynamic places on earth during the annual China Connection: Strategies for Entry and Operation program organized by the KU School of Business. The students spent two weeks learning about the business environment and culture of Beijing, Xi’an and Shanghai.

KU business professor Tailan Chi accompanied the students. Through Chi’s connections, and the school's relationship with faculty and alumni in China, business students were given an exceptional level of access to executives from corporations including AECOM-Maunsell, Black and Veatch Energy, Invista and the Chinese Ministry of Commerce.

KU MBA student Justin Lueger attended the program and said the experience helped him understand how China could become the most powerful economic force on earth.

“In China, seeing is believing. My professors have talked at length about the emergence of China and the impact it will have on the world. But it wasn’t until I visited the country that I fully understood why.”

Save the date: Homecoming 2008

The School of Business will once again host a class reunion and homecoming celebration in conjunction with the KU Homecoming football game this fall. Alumni classes that are celebrating five-year increment anniversaries from 1923 and 1928 through 2003 and 2008 are invited.

So mark your calendar for Saturday, Oct. 25, for the KU-Texas Tech Homecoming football game in Memorial Stadium.

Our Homecoming tent provides alumni, students, faculty and friends the opportunity to reconnect and celebrate the beginning of another successful year for the Jayhawks. Refreshments will be provided.

We look forward to seeing you on the Hill Saturday, Oct. 25. Click here for photos from last year’s event.
