Did you know?
For decades, KU Info has fielded calls on just about every topic imaginable. But one query in particular was asked over and over: How many trees are there on campus? KU Info’s official answer for years was 17,900, but staff admitted this was an outdated number and offered to credit anyone who came up with the actual figure. An undergraduate global information systems class took on the challenge. How many trees do you think provide shade for KU's beautiful campus? Click here to see the results of their study.

Business school names distinguished alumni

The KU School of Business awarded its Distinguished Alumni Award to outstanding leaders in the accounting and entertainment industries at an annual banquet April 10. The 2008 honorees are Peter C. Brown, chairman of AMC Entertainment, Inc., and Stephen A. Batman, chairman of 1st Global, a financial services firm.

Brown is a former member of the school’s board of advisors and Batman has been a member of the school’s board of advisors for accounting and information services for seven years.Batman

“Peter and Tony have each been trailblazers in their respective fields,” Dean William L. Fuerst said. “Their achievements demonstrate the diverse potential offered by a degree from the KU School of Business. We are proud to honor Peter and Tony as Distinguished Alumni.”

The Distinguished Alumni Award was created in 1998 to honor outstanding graduates from the School of Business.

On March 26, more than 600 people filled Woodruff Auditorium to hear Ray Anderson deliver “Sustainability in Action;” the 2008 Walter S. Sutton Lecture presented by the KU School of Business and the KU International Center for Ethics in Business.

To open the lecture, business professor Douglas May presented six KU students with the RESPECT Positive Code of Conduct Award. This year’s recipients are Mark R. Best, Kimberly L. Elliott, Jake Messersmith, Rachel Sanner, Kirk Smith and David Wise. The award honors top students who follow the principles of the code: responsibility, enthusiasm, self-esteem, professional integrity, equity, compassion and teamwork.

In conjunction with the lecture, the school arranged for Ray Anderson to visit Topeka to discuss sustainability issues with Governor Kathleen Sebelius and Lt. Governor Mark Parkinson. Anderson also met with sustainability leaders from the KU community, including representatives from the business, architecture, engineering, journalism and fine arts schools.

Jennifer Jordan receives KU staff award

Jennifer Jordan, Director of the Business Career Services Center, received KU’s 2008 Outstanding Woman Staff Member Award. Jordan was honored with other exemplary female leaders from the KU community at the annual Woman’s Recognition Program March 27.

“Under Jennifer’s exceptional leadership, the BCSC has expanded services offered to students and employers, forged strong ties with the various boards in the School, and further developed the BCSC office,” Dean William L. Fuerst said. “Jennifer has worked closely with students, faculty, staff and recruiters in developing initiatives for the benefit of our students.”

Multiple individuals, from the business school and others, supported Jordan’s nomination for this prestigious award. The University’s Commission on the Status of Women and Emily Taylor Women’s Resource Center sponsor the Women’s Recognition Program.

Other School of Business staff members recognized in the past by the KU Women’s Recognition Program include Masters Programs Administrative Director Dee Steinle, 2002 Outstanding Woman Staff Member Award, and Business Professor Renate Mai-Dalton, founder of the Multicultural Business Scholars Program and 1995 Hall of Fame winner.

Faculty named to management journal's editorial board

Three faculty members from the business school have been named to the Editorial Board of Strategic Management Journal, the top academic journal for publishing business strategy research. Professors Laura Poppo, Vince Barker and Tailan Chi represent the school on the board.

Only seven other universities in the world have more faculty representation on the board than KU. The University is the only Big 12 school to have at least three editorial board members.

Other schools with three board members include: Emory University, Michigan State University, Ohio State University, University of Minnesota, University of North Carolina, University of Pennsylvania and Washington University in St. Louis.

Strategic Management Journal publishes original refereed material concerned with all aspects of strategic management. It is devoted to the improvement and further development of the theory and practice of strategic management and it is designed to appeal to both business managers and academics. The journal is currently published 12 times per year.
