Governor to lead Homecoming celebrations

Gov. Kathleen Sebelius, who earned a master’s in public administration from KU in 1980, will be the grand marshal for the annual Homecoming parade Nov. 3 along Jayhawk Boulevard on the Lawrence campus.

Themed "Jayhawk Nation," Homecoming Week takes place Oct. 27-Nov. 3. Festivities will culminate with the governor’s appearance at the parade and a football game against the University of Nebraska on Saturday, Nov. 3. Sebelius will be honored at halftime of the game. The parade will be held at 9:30 a.m., two hours before the 11:30 a.m. kickoff.

Homecoming Week will begin with a 5K Spirit Sprint benefiting United Way and with "Stuff the Bus," a canned food drive benefiting needy families. The drive will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 27, at Dillons on 23rd Street, and from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 28, outside of Lewis Hall.

Events will be held on campus throughout the week, including a three-on-three basketball tournament, Chalk 'n' Rock, a medallion hunt in which clues to the location of a hidden medallion will be printed in the University Daily Kansan, a pep rally, a mural competition and the Jayhawk Nation Money Station. The money station is an inflatable prize machine students can enter to grab and win scholarships from KU Endowment, gift certificates from local businesses, homecoming T-shirts and cash.
