Zoo carousel features KU steed

When visitors take a ride on the new endangered species carousel at the Kansas City Zoo, they will have their choice of 36 hand-carved wooden animals. Most depict an endangered species, many of which are on exhibit at the zoo. However, carousel riders also have their pick of area mascots, including a Missouri Tiger and a Kansas State Wildcat.

Unfortunately, according to the zoo officials, the Jayhawk does not exist in the animal kingdom. So instead of including a carousel-sized Jayhawk, the beloved KU mascot is represented on the saddle of one of the carousel horses.

The endangered species carousel debuted May 24 at the zoo. Rides are $2. The idea was inspired from a similar zoo carousel in Battle Creek, Mich. Along with area mascots that also include the University of Missouri-Kansas City's kangaroo and the Kansas City Royals' lion mascot, Slugger, riders can sit upon a rhino, hippo, cheetah or a dart frog.
