KU debate reaches Elite Eight

KU has reached the Elite Eight, but not in basketball. On March 22-26, a team of KU debaters placed third out of 175 in the Cross Examination Debate Association national tournament competition at the University of Oklahoma in Norman. Additionally, three debaters finished in the top 20 in the individual speaker competition.

Brett Bricker, Wichita junior, and Andrew Jennings, Silver Lake junior, defeated teams from Wake Forest, the University of Texas, Emory University and the United States Military Academy to reach third place, but lost to an OU team in a 2-1 split decision.

“This was an outstanding performance by the entire squad,” said coach Scott Harris, who earlier this year was named the 2006 National Debate Coach of the Year.

Jon Wright, Stillwell senior; Lindsey Lathrop, Overland Park senior; and Andrew Jennings, Silver Lake junior, reached the top 20 as part of the individual speaker’s competition. Wright placed fifth, Lathrop placed 17th, and Jennings placed 18th. Wright was named to the CEDA All-American team and Lathrop to the Academic All-American team.

The CEDA tournament is an intercollegiate event open to any team that wants to attend, and each team participated in eight debates to narrow the field to 64.

On March 30 through April 2, the Jennings-Bricker team and the team of Lathrop and Nate Johnson, Manhattan senior, competed in the National Championship Debate Tournament in Dallas, Texas.
