Alumnus judge speaks at Thurgood Marshall Law Day
Judge Joseph D. Johnson, l'76, the first black attorney to be appointed to the bench in Shawnee County, presented the keynote address, titled "The Importance of Academic Excellence," at the 11th Annual Thurgood Marshall Law Day event at the KU School of Law on Friday, Feb. 23.After 30 years of practicing in the Topeka area, Johnson was appointed district judge in Shawnee County in 2005. After graduating from law school, he served as a public defender for three years. He then started his own practice.
Thurgood Marshall Law Day, sponsored by the Black Law Students Association, honors the memory of the late Marshall by reaching out to area high school students and stimulating their interest in law through a daylong legal seminar. By providing engaging presentations from KU law professors and practicing attorneys, BLSA hopes to encourage the students' interest in the legal profession.
Marshall was the first black attorney appointed to the U.S. Supreme Court. Marshall also argued for desegregation in the landmark civil rights case Brown v. Board of Education.
