Football facility rendering released

The University and KU Athletics unveiled the latest rendering of the the $31-million Anderson Family Football Complex, to be built near the southwest corner of Memorial Stadium.

Plans for the building include offices, academic areas, a weight room, locker rooms, an audio-visual room, meeting rooms, a cardio room, a hydro-therapy room, a nutrition area and a display area. HNTB Architecture of Kansas City, Mo., designed the project, which is scheduled to be completed by summer 2008.

Funding was provided to KU Endowment largely through two KU alumni families—former basketball team captain Tom Kivisto, c'74, and his wife, Julie, c'78; and Dana, b'59, Sue, Justin, b'95, and Jean Anderson, c'96—as well as several other families, including Charles, b'54, and Sharon Lynch Kimbell, d'58, of Hutchinson; Frank Sabatini, b'55, l'57, and family of Topeka; and Ken Wagnon, b'60, of Wichita.

"The entire KU athletics family is indebted to these families and to all those who have donated to this project for their generosity," Athletics Director Lew Perkins said. "This facility will help Kansas Athletics in a number of ways. It will certainly help KU football compete on a more even plane with other Big 12 programs but also, by consolidating all football activities into one area, the facility will free up space needed for other sports."

"The new football facility will embrace the hillside southwest of the football stadium in a manner that will not detract from the beauty of campanile hill," said Warren Corman, e'50, University architect. "It will nestle into the hillside where an asphalt parking lot now exists, and the roof over the underground weight room will be covered with natural grass turf."

The project will begin with new parking lots to replace the existing ones where the structure will rest. For more information about the football facility, read a letter from Lew Perkins.
