Big honors in the Big 12

Jayhawks earned another big win against Texas and the Big 12 Tournament Championship title last Saturday. In the first overtime game in Big 12 Tournament history, Sherron Collins scored 20 points, Julian Wright and Brandon Rush both put up 19 and Mario Chalmers made 17 shots, including the 3-pointer that tied them against Texas. Darnell Jackson and Russell Robinson made big plays on the charity stripe sinking two free throws each and securing the win. Both Wright and Rush were named to the all-tournament team.

The championship was a true team effort, with All-Big 12 honors going to six Jayhawks: Mario Chalmers, Brandon Rush, Julian Wright, Russell Robinson, Darrell Arthur and Sherron Collins.

Rush and Wright were each named to the All-Big 12 first team. Chalmers garnered co-defensive player of the year accolades with Marcus Dove of Oklahoma State and was also selected third team all-conference. Arthur and Collins were honorable mention all-league selections and members of the all-rookie squad. Chalmers and Robinson were on the Big 12's all-defensive team.

KU swimming makes a splash at the Big 12 championships
The KU swimming and diving team finished the Big 12 Conference Championships in third place, behind first-place Texas A&M and second-place Texas. Kansas placed fourth at both the 2005 and 2006 Big 12 meets with its last third-place victory in 2004.

Leading the way for the Jayhawks in competition was freshman and Lawrence native Ashley Robinson. Robinson's 1,650-yard freestyle was good for a KU third-place in the event, a new school record for KU. Senior captain Jenny Short, sophomore Danielle Herrmann and freshman Ashley Robinson represented the University at the National Championships March 8-10 in Minneapolis, Minn.

Track and Field members capture crowns
KU track and field athletes turned in outstanding performances at the Big 12 Indoor Championships. Freshman Jordan Scott took the men's pole-vaulting crown. Junior Colby Wissel, the 2006 Big 12 cross country champion, won the men's 3,000-meter run, while sophomore Ashley Brown, junior Julius Jiles and sophomore Sha'Ray Butler recorded top-three finishes in their respective events. In the final standings, the women's team placed sixth with 52 points, while the men's squad placed seventh with 57 points.

Three Jayhawks represented KU in the NCAA Indoor Championships March 9-10 in Fayetteville, Ark. Junior Kate Sultanova placed third in the women's pole vault and tied a KU record held by former national champion Amy Linnen. Colby Wissel took seventh place the men's 3000 meters in a time of 7:58.42. Finally, junior Egor Agafonov won the 2007 National Championship in the weight throw.
