KU design chair to make third appearance on talk radio show
Gregory Thomas, chair of the Department of Design in KU's School of Fine Arts, appeared for the third time on News Radio 980 KMBZ's Living Large show Sunday, Feb. 11.Living Large, a design and lifestyle show based out of Kansas City, airs on more than one station and streams live around the world. Each week, the host, respected designer Karen Mills, reveals the latest trends in design and interviews national celebrities from HGTV, ABC, DIY and more, along with other well-known designers and experts in the field.
Professor Thomas' visit focused on the topic of "Living Large with Sustainable but Beautiful Homes." As one of the hottest topics of the day, sustainable design involves the creation of buildings, consumer products, etc., that have the least effect on our natural resources. Read more.
KU design professor chosen as 2007 American Craft Show Searchlight Artist
Thomas Huang, assistant professor of industrial design in KU's Department of Design, was recently named a 2007 American Craft Show Searchlight Artist. Huang joins 14 other artists as a nominated Searchlight Artist, a category newly created by the American Craft Council to feature emerging artists.As a result of this nomination, Huang has been juried into the American Craft Show in Baltimore, exhibiting his works for more than 25,000 people. The chosen Searchlight Artists will be presented together in a special gallery section of the show, Feb. 23-25, at the Baltimore Convention Center. Huang will exhibit his furniture and sculptures.
Nominations for Searchlight Artists were received by department chairs of prestigious schools teaching craft, past Council jurors and the editorial team of AMERICAN CRAFT, a magazine created by the Council.

Award-winning Spanish flamenco guitarist and dancer visit KU for residency
The Department of Music and Dance in KU's School of Fine Arts welcomes the award-winning Spanish flamenco guitarist José Luis Rodriguez and Cuban-American flamenco dancer Niurca Marquez to Lawrence for an intensive residency, Feb. 10-18.The artists will be conducting daily dance technique classes for students in the KU dance division, setting a new work for the University Dance Company and providing master classes for flamenco artists in the region. Rodriguez and Marquez will conduct lectures on the history of flamenco and its musical structures for students and the general public. The highlight of the residency will be a lecture demonstration that allows audiences to see live flamenco music and dance, and engage the artists in discussion. Read more.
