Classroom cash: Top professors receive Kemper awards

The KU "Surprise Patrol" delivered the good news and more than $100,000 to unsuspecting professors and staff. Each year the Kemper Award winners are selected by a by a seven-member committee, and along with recognition from their peers, receive $5,000.

Now in their 11th year, the W.T. Kemper Fellowships for Teaching Excellence recognize outstanding teachers and advisers at KU. The awards were established by a $500,000 fund from the William T. Kemper Foundation-Commerce Bank, Trustee, and $500,000 in matching funds from the KU Endowment Association.

The William T. Kemper Foundation was established in 1989 after Kemper's death. The foundation is dedicated to continuing Kemper's lifelong interest in improving the human condition and quality of life. The foundation supports Midwest communities and concentrates on initiatives in education, health and human services, civic improvements and the arts.

This year, 20 winners were selected:

  1. J. Christopher Brown, assistant professor of geography and environmental studies
  2. Matthew Buechner, associate professor of molecular biosciences
  3. Michael S. Engel, c'93, c'93, associate professor of ecology and evolutionary biology
  4. James L. Fishback, m'83, associate professor of pathology and laboratory medicine
  5. David Frayer, professor of anthropology
  6. Lisa Friis, assistant professor of mechanical engineering
  7. Bernard A. "Bud" Hirsch, professor of English
    * Professor Hirsch died Sunday, Sept. 4, 2006 of brain cancer. He was 61 years old.
  8. Shane J. Lopez, g'97, PhD'99, associate professor of the counseling psychology program
  9. Tom Lorenz, professor of English
  10. Beth Manolescu, associate professor of communication studies
  11. James H. Mielke, professor of anthropology
  12. Garold O. Minns, m'76, director for the department of internal medicine residency program
  13. William D. Picking, PhD'90, associate professor of molecular biosciences
  14. Joan A. Sereno, associate professor of linguistics
  15. Ric G. Steele, associate professor of psychology and applied behavioral sciences
  16. Steven W. Stites, m'93, associate professor of internal medicine
  17. William E. Westerbeke, professor of law
  18. Sara Wilson, assistant professor of mechanical engineering
  19. Lisa Wolf-Wendel, professor of higher education
  20. Judy Wu, professor of physics
