"Extreme Engineering" Expo: Feb. 24-25

Extreme is the theme at the annual Engineering Expo. The expo, coordinated by the KU Engineering Student Council and held during National Engineers Week, will be Friday, Feb. 24, and Saturday, Feb. 25, at KU. Sam Gilliland, e’85, will serve as the keynote speaker. He is a KU electrical engineering alumnus and the chairman and CEO of Sabre Holdings, a world leader in travel commerce and parent company of Travelocity.
Gilliland’s presentation at 9:30 a.m. in the Lied Center of Kansas will kickoff the weekend’s activities, which also includes an annual open house at the KU School of Engineering that enables students throughout the region to experience the fun of engineering. The expo features hands-on exhibits, demonstrations and contests for visitors of all ages—in keeping with this year’s theme, “Extreme Engineering.” Read more
Overland Park Students Win Future City Competition

A team of eighth-graders from Westridge Middle School in Overland Park won the top honor at the 3rd Great Plains Regional Future City Competition Saturday, Jan. 28, at the University of Kansas.
Nearly 200 students in seventh and eighth grade from across the state and the Kansas City metropolitan area took part in the annual engineering competition.
"The creativity, ingenuity and hard work on display at the competition is a sign of the great results we can expect from all these students," said Robert Sorem, associate dean for undergraduate studies at the KU School of Engineering, which hosted this year's event. "All the contestants—not just the winners—should be proud of what they were able to accomplish. They did an amazing job." Read more
