KU grad David Hunke named publisher of Detroit Free Press

University of Kansas alumnus David L. Hunke was named president and publisher of the Detroit Free Press in August.

Hunke (pronounced HUNK-ee), a 1974 graduate of the William Allen White School of Journalism and Mass Communications, was previously president and publisher of the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle in New York.

Hunke, 53, started his career in newspaper advertising 34 years ago by taking want ads for the University Daily Kansan, according to an Aug. 4 story in the Free Press. He also served as executive vice president for the Cincinnati Enquirer and Post and director of advertising for the Miami Herald.

The top priority, Hunke said, is to help develop “a personal feeling” between readers and the paper. To read more about Hunke, see the Free Press story here.
