Baby Jay strikes it rich

Jessica Virtue, who performs at KU athletics and alumni events as the Baby Jay mascot, and her mother, Linda Gilstrap, won $22,000 during an April 8 taping of “Wheel of Fortune” in Kansas City’s Bartle Hall.

Virtue, a senior journalism major, last fall filled out online applications to appear with her mother at Kansas City tapings of “Wheel of Fortune: Mom and Me” episodes, to be aired during the week of Mother’s Day. Not only did they prevail during the selection process for a treasured place at the famous wheel, but they also hit it big when Virtue deciphered Vanna White’s letter board with the answer, “Feature-length animated film.”

Their episode is scheduled to be broadcast May 2.
