Doctor establishes scholarship fund for Alma and Osage City students

In 1949, Cal Engelmann, a graduate from Alma High School, sought a way to afford tuition at the University of Kansas. Engelmann was befriended by Irvin Youngberg, then executive secretary of the Kansas University Endowment Association. Youngberg, who also was from rural Kansas, helped Engelmann find scholarships to attend KU.

Now a retired physician, Engelmann is repaying this debt to Youngberg, c’42, by establishing a scholarship fund at KU Endowment designated for students from Youngberg’s alma mater, Osage City High School, as well as his own alma mater, now Wabaunsee High School.

The Engelmann-Youngberg Scholarship Fund will award a $1,200 annual scholarship to freshmen who have graduated from either high school. The scholarship will alternate between the two schools every other year.

Engelmann, c’53, m’57, and his wife, Anneliese Schnierle Engelmann, b’53, said they would like to see more students from the Alma and Osage City areas have the opportunity to study at KU.

KU Endowment is an independent, non-profit organization serving as the official fund-raising and fund-management foundation for the University of Kansas. Founded in 1891, KU Endowment is the oldest foundation of its type at a public university in the United States and one of the largest.
