APM portfolio continues to show positive returns

The Applied Portfolio Management (APM) class again had good news to share in its third quarter portfolio performance report.

The APM portfolio ended the third quarter at $696,875, up $28,740 over the last three months. This equates to a positive return of 5.1% compared to negative third quarter returns for the major market indices. Its year-to-date return of 4.1% trails the S&P 600 smallcap index, but has managed to beat the S&P 500, S&P 600, Value Line, and NASDAQ indices over the last four quarters.

The APM class was created in 1993 as a result of a $250,000 contribution by Kent McCarthy, Business School alumnus. Catherine Shenoy, associate professor and director of APM explained that students work in groups of three or four, doing research on potential investments and tracking their progress. Guest speakers, many of whom are University of Kansas alumni and CEOs of companies the groups are considering, visit the class and give information on their respective companies. Working with the faculty, the members of the class make investment decisions together.

New majors offered at the Business School

The School of Business has been advancing its program to include four new majors. “We have taken the significant step of expanding the majors offered to students at the School,” Dean Bill Fuerst announced. Beginning this semester the newest major, Finance, is available, alongside the existing majors of Business and Accounting. In addition, three vital new majors will soon be offered: Marketing, Management, and Information Systems.

“We are confident that expanding the selection of majors takes an essential step towards meeting the needs of both students and their future employers. These broadened choices for scholarship allow students to focus their academic efforts while they are in school, and provides the groundwork for achievement and leadership in their careers.” Fuerst said. “We anticipate these new majors will satisfy key demands of the market place as employers increasingly seek graduates with expertise in these critical fields of study.”
