KU
athletes set records in the classroom
University of Kansas student-athletes recorded their
best academic performance in department history during
the Spring 2004 semester, posting a 2.98 grade point
average, and 226 Jayhawks were named to the Athletics
Director's Honor Roll (3.0 or better GPA). Twenty-three
of the honorees recorded a perfect 4.0.
"We are extremely proud of the work our student-athletes
have done in the classroom," Athletics Director
Lew Perkins said. "These accomplishments are a
credit not only to them, but also to the support they
receive from our faculty and student support staff."
Leading the department last semester was the KU swimming
and diving team, which achieved a team-record 3.39 GPA.
KU rowing (3.39) and soccer (3.28) also achieved team-record
GPAs. Men's basketball achieved a 2.84 GPA, the third-best
among KU's male teams behind golf (3.12) and track and
field (2.94).
"It is always our number one priority to achieve
in the classroom each semester," head swimming
and diving coach Clark Campbell said. "Our team
really cares about finishing high among all varsity
sports at Kansas regarding classroom success. It is
a great way to end the semester."
The 226 Jayhawks who achieved a 3.0 or better in Spring
2004 accounted for 55 percent of the total KU student-athlete
population.
