MBA Essentials: classroom information you can apply
to your job tomorrow
Laurie
Halfert, business case manager for Sprint, hoped to
climb the corporate ladder. But she faced a problem.
While she was secure at her present location, the rungs
above Halfert were out of reach. She was stuck-but not
for long.
Her desire provided the gumption to further her education,
so Halfert chose a program called MBA Essentials. KU's
School of Business offers the program twice a year,
and it fit Halfert's schedule.
"If I had to pick a three-hour block of time,
it worked out very well, given it's just one day a week,"
she said. "And 6 to 9 in the evening was good timing
because it wasn't extremely late or butting against
work hours."
MBA Essentials is a 13-week program that provides pertinent
business information to employees and managers who have
never before studied business.
During each session, the program explores ways to boost
earnings, customers and dominance. The sessions are
held at the KU Edwards Campus in Overland Park. The
registration fee is $2,695, which includes all course
materials. This fall the program meets Wednesday evenings
starting Sep. 8 and ends with graduation Dec. 16.
"The course is specifically designed for folks
who have no prior business study exposure," said
Bill Beedles, professor of business. "Almost everybody
[in the program] has never studied business before.
So you get a lot of engineers, nurses, journalists,
people who have a business component to their work,
and they need to understand the business side better."

KU Marketing Club wins top two honors
This
year's International American Marketing Association
Collegiate Conference in New Orleans ended splendidly
for the KU Marketing Club. It was the club's first competition.
Nevertheless, they managed to reel in two awards.
"It was an unexpected pleasure for all of us,"
said Joyce Claterbos, faculty adviser for the club and
business school faculty member. She said she was thinking,
"Gosh, I guess we are doing something above and
beyond."
The club, formed in 2002, won the New Chapter Performance
Award, which was based on the chapter's constitution
and its planned and completed activities of last year.
Outstanding Regional Chapter for the Western Division
was the second award. This prestigious honor included
90 chapters vying for the second highest award given
by the AMA. Read
