Alumnus creates sculpture for Lied Center
A
sculpture by nationally recognized artist and Lawrence
resident Stephen T. Johnson, f'87, was unveiled April
1 at a reception at the Lied Center of Kansas, KU's
premier center for the performing arts. The Friends
of the Lied commissioned the sculpture from Johnson
last fall as a to celebrate the Lied Center's 10th anniversary
and the 100th anniversary of the KU Concert Series.
Johnson's sculpture, "Arrangement in Red, Blue
and Gold," depicts the simplest of forms in musical
notation, such as the treble and bass clefs and the
forte symbol. He said he hoped the piece would "evoke
the rhythms, movement and enjoyment we experience we
watch performances at the Lied."
Johnson's design was crafted by Cotter Mitchell, longtime
materials lab coordinator for the School of Fine Arts.
Mitchell for years built custom picture frames and crates
for Johnson's paintings when the artist began his career
in New York City. After moving back to his hometown
of Lawrence and receiving the Friends of the Lied commission,
Johnson said, he thought of no one else but Mitchell
to help execute his concept. The 18-foot by 12-foot
structure is made of aluminum plate with a baked enamel
paint finish in shades of red, blue and gold. Both artists
also thanked Pearson Collision Repair, a local auto
body shop, for assistance with the project. Read
