Former Secretary of the Navy presents the Walter
S. Sutton Lecture

James Webb, former Secretary of the Navy, will deliver
the 2004 Walter S. Sutton Lecture, "Perspectives
of an American Ronin" at 7 p.m. April 28, in Kansas
Union.
The lecture is presented by the School of Business
and the International Center for Ethics in Business.
It is free to the public; tickets are not required.
Webb became Secretary of the Navy in 1987. He resigned
after refusing to agree with the reduction of the Navy's
force structure during Congressionally mandated budget
cuts.
He served with the Fifth Marine Regiment in Vietnam.
He was awarded the Navy Cross, the Silver Star Medal,
two Bronze Star Medals, and two Purple Hearts. He received
his law degree from Georgetown University Law Center.
Webb is the author of six best-selling novels including
Fields of Fire, considered by many to be the classic
novel of the Vietnam war. His original story "Rules
of Engagement," was made into a motion picture
starring Tommy Lee Jones and Samuel L. Jackson. His
fifth novel, The Emperor's General, was purchased by
Paramount pictures as the largest book-to-film deal
of 1998
Lecture honors memory of alumnus who became leader
in accounting
Since 1993 the University 's International Center for
Ethics in Business and the School of Business have presented
the Walter S. Sutton Lecture Series, made possible by
Betsey G. Sutton in memory of Walter Sutton.
Walter Sutton, b'39, served as managing partner for
the firm of Peat, Marwick, Mitchell & Co., before
its merger with KPMG, which formed the present firm
of KPMG Peat Marwick. He served on the executive committee
from 1954 to 1975.
The International Center for Ethics in Business is
a cooperative effort of the School of Business and the
College of Liberal Arts. The Center's purpose is to
promote individual and corporate integrity in both U.S.
and international business through research, service,
education in ethical principles and behavior. Co-directors
are H. Joseph Reitz, professor of business, and Richard
T. DeGeorge, distinguished professor of philosophy.
This year's speaker is James Webb, former Secretary
of the Navy, at 7 p.m. April 28 at the Kansas Union.
The public is invited; tickets are not required.
