Promising recruits round out 2004 football class

Mark Mangino

Twenty standout student-athletes have signed national letters of intent to attend the University and play football next season for head coach Mark Mangino. The recruiting class—Mangino's third at KU—is ranked among the nation's top 50 by Rivals.com.

"We believe that we've helped ourselves in areas of need and enhanced the overall athleticism and speed of our football team with this recruiting class," said Mangino.

The Jayhawks signed three of the top recruits from Kansas-offensive lineman Todd Haselhorst, Olathe East High School; offensive lineman Scott Haverkamp, Silver Lake High School; and linebacker Mike Rivera, Shawnee Mission Northwest High School. In addition, 11 members of the 2004 class are Texas natives, including nine high school signees.

Mangino also announced that three players who were with the program a year ago—Scott Bajza, Zack Hood and Matt Thompson—will receive scholarships for the 2004 season. Two additional student-athletes, Jeff Edwards, Lenexa, and Josh Lawrence of Lawrence, will join the team as walk-ons.
