KJHK transfers to KU Memorial Unions

KU's student operated radio station, KJHK, has transferred from the William Allen White School of Journalism to the KU Memorial Unions. Gary Hawke, former KJHK general manager and David Mucci, director of KU Memorial Unions, initiated the transfer as a solution to budget constraints facing the journalism school.

While the physical location of the KJHK studios remains the same, KJHK will operate under the programs department of the KU Memorial Unions and be within the organization of Student Success. Andrew Dierks, c'99, former KJHK music director, has been hired as general manager and faculty adviser for the station. Dierks replaces Hawke, who will stay with the journalism school to advise KUJH, the student-operated television station.

The transfer became effective Jan. 5; Mucci says the Unions were eager to support the radio station. "The Unions were a logical home for KJHK at the University," he said. "We are student-centered, experienced in program advising and an exchange center. KJHK logically fits into our mission of building campus community and exposure to new ideas and experiences."

The Memorial Corporation Board approved the proposal to govern KJHK with the understanding that KJHK would continue to make strides in four specific areas:

  • Growing the listening audience

  • Contributing to the KU community

  • Providing learning and leadership opportunities to students

  • Move towards financial self-sufficiency

KJHK looks forward to succeeding in these areas while remaining committed to being a diverse student-run organization devoted to producing cutting-edge, professional programming for the KU and Lawrence community.
