20 professors win cash teaching prizes from Surprise
Patrol

Rodolfo Torres, associate professor
of mathematics

Every fall, KU dispatches a "Surprise Patrol,"
led by the chancellor or provost, to burst into classrooms
and present winning professors a $5,000 check and an
award - along with $5 Pizza Hut coupons for each student.
The "Surprise Patrol" so far has handed out
19 of 20 $5,000 checks in association with the 2003
Kemper Awards for excellence in teaching and advising.

In all, $100,000 will be distributed with Kemper Awards
by Sept. 15
The W.T. Kemper Fellowships for Teaching Excellence
recognize outstanding teachers and advisers at KU as
determined by a seven-member selection committee. Nominations
for next year's Kemper Awards will be accepted and reviewed
in the spring.

Now in the eighth year of a 10-year program, the awards
were established by a $500,000 fund from the William
T. Kemper Foundation-Commerce Bank, Trustee, and $500,000
in matching funds from the KU Endowment Association.
