Student from former Soviet Republic second member
of family to attend KU
Tleules
(Michael) Mananov may be the only student from former
Soviet republic Kazakhstan on the KU campus, but he
is the second member of his family to attend KU. His
mother was an exchange scholar from 1999-2000, an experience
that solidified the family's connection to the university
and Lawrence.
Rakhiya Bekbayeva came to KU for the 1999-2000 academic
year through the Junior Faculty Development Program,
a non-degree professional development program for scholars
from the newly independent republics. While at KU she
audited classes, mainly in the Communication Studies
Department, and did some guest teaching, all in order
to develop Business English/Communication curriculum
for her home institution in Almaty. Two of her children,
Michael and his younger sister, Rose, spent most of
that year in Lawrence, attending Southwest Junior High
School.
Three years later Michael has returned as a KU freshman.

of a career as a diplomat and the state of European-American
relations.
As part of the State Department's Home Town Diplomat
program, Rodgers, who most recently served as the political/economic
affairs officer and U.S. consulate general in Hamburg,
Germany, came back to Lawrence to share his experience
