PRESTIGIOUS NASA AWARD THE LATEST IN RECOGNITION
FOR KU'S INDUSTRIAL DESIGN

pride soared sky-high recently when a student team from
University of Kansas' industrial design program won
third place in a prestigious National Aeronautics and
Space Administration aviation design competition.
Tom Brantman, Overland Park, Kan.; Greg Groener, St.
Charles, Ill.; Mike Klodginski, San Antonio; and Mike
Carman, Newton, Kan., were recognized for their design
achievements with a $2,000 award for third place in
NASA's Revolutionary Vehicles: Concepts and Systems
University Student Competition 2003.
The contest challenged 10 student teams to devise design
concepts for the Small Aircraft Transportation System
(SATS), NASA's vision for an air transportation system
that would use advanced small aircraft to relieve road
and air gridlock and increase access to the nation's

KU APPOINTS NEW DIRECTOR OF ORCHESTRAL ACTIVITIES
LAWRENCE
- Nicholas Uljanov, the new director of orchestral activities
at Kansas University, brings a world of experience to
the job - literally.
Uljanov, who accepted the position May 21 and is originally
from Austria, received degrees from St. Petersburg Conservatory
in orchestral and opera conducting from 1979 to 1984.
He then pursued further conducting studies at the Vienna
High School of Music and later enjoyed a successful
debut at the Concertgebouw Amsterdam in 1991. Since
that time, he has traveled extensively through invitations
to conduct with various major European orchestras, opera
houses and festivals, including the Orchestra Philharmonique
de Radio France; the Orchestra de la Suisse Romande;
the Bavarian State Opera Munich; the State Opera Leipzig;
and the Munich Opera Festival.
