KU claims 24th Rhodes, 9th Marshall scholarships

Robert Chamberlain

It has been a banner year for KU in the competition for two of the most prestigious scholarships in the country.

Jayhawks this fall have claimed a Rhodes Scholarship and a Marshall Scholarship, worth a combined $100,000 or more.

Robert Michael Chamberlain, a May 2002 KU graduate from Topeka and Yates Center, won Saturday one of 32 Rhodes scholarships given nationally for two years of graduate study at Oxford University. Chamberlain, who is a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army, is the 24th KU student to win a Rhodes and the first since 1994.

Chamberlain, who also won a Truman Scholar award in 2001, plans a public service career in international law in a position that will enable him to influence and create international agreements and legal policy, and to change the way policy makers, political scientists and defense leaders think about international law.

Mark Bradshaw

Mark Bradshaw, a May 2001 KU graduate from Walnut, earlier won one of 40 Marshall scholarships, also for two years of graduate study in Great Britain. He becomes the ninth KU student to win a Marshall scholarship and the third since 1999.

As an undergraduate, Bradshaw also won national competitions for Truman and Udall scholarships in the same year. He is the first KU student to win Truman, Udall and Marshall scholarships. He plans a career working with environmental issues.
