KU First: Students score scholarships at Football Game

A Sea of Blue: Students wearing free KU First T-shirts were admitted free to the KU vs. Southwest Missouri State University football game Sept. 14. They then had a chance to win one of 25 $1,000 scholarships through the KU Endowment Association.

For the second consecutive year, 25 University of Kansas students attending a KU football game were surprised with scholarships worth $1,000 each.

Officials with the Kansas University Endowment Association selected the students Saturday from among those present at the match-up between KU and Southwest Missouri State University. Students were selected from pre-chosen seats at Memorial Stadium and numerically from among those entering the gates.

To qualify for the scholarships, students at the game had to be enrolled at KU and wear one of the 19,000 blue 2002 edition KU First T-shirts, which were given away on KU's four campuses. Students did not have to purchase anything to win. KU First: Invest in Excellence is the name of the third and largest fund-raising campaign for the university.

Scholarship Winners: Twenty-five winners of $1,000 scholarships celebrate their good luck with, from left, Donor Dick Tinberg with his sons, Rich of Winnetka, Ill., and Troy of Denver, Colorado, Mike Maddox, president of Intrust Bank in Lawrence and KU Chancellor Robert E. Hemenway.

The T-shirts, which were funded in part by Intrust Bank, allowed students to attend the game for free.

The scholarships were made possible by a $25,000 gift to KU Endowment from longtime KU supporters Dick, b'48, and Jeanne Waymire Tinberg, b'49. The Leawood, Kan., couple also provided the scholarships awarded during a fall 2001 football game between KU and UCLA. The scholarships will be applied to the students' spring tuition.
