During this week of recollection, KU Connection offers details of the University's events commemorating Sept. 11. Last fall, two days after the terrorist attacks, Chancellor Robert E. Hemenway urged faculty and staff to provide forums for discussion and healing. "There is need for conversation led by a professor, even if we don't feel that wise at the moment," he said. "Be there for your students during these days of crisis that will live with them forever. Thirty years from now, let them remember that we were there together."

As our nation marks Sept. 11, the KU community will return to the Memorial Campanile. In the days that follow, the observance will continue with lectures and discussions on numerous subjects related to the attacks and their aftermath.

Also in this issue, we share several scenes that capture the beginning of another academic year on Mount Oread. May these images of new Jayhawks help you recall your first lessons in KU traditions — and the hope and optimism that remain part of University life.

Warmest wishes from the Hill —

KU Endowment Association Becomes First Themed Sponsor:
The KU Endowment Association is sponsoring a themed series of articles in This Week In KU History focusing on various firsts in the history of the University of Kansas. This collection of KU Firsts covers such moments as the first time crimson and blue became official KU colors, the earliest iteration of the Rock Chalk chant, the first time the campus steam whistle blew to signal the end of classes, and the opening game of the Kansas-Missouri football rivalry back in 1891. The series also includes stories about KU's earliest student publication, the University's first building and its original faculty, and the first time the basketball Jayhawks won the NCAA championship. In all, this collection comprises 20 articles.

A project of the KU Memorial Unions, "This Week In KU History" is going online Fall 2002. Learn More
