Like many athletes, Katherine Cosgrove credits her
coaches for her success. So when President Bush appointed
her to the President's Council on Physical Fitness and
Sports, she called her master's adviser, KU professor

During its 2002-03 season, The Lied Center of Kansas
at KU will join in the international celebration of
the St. Petersburg Tercentenary, offering several performances
that honor Russian culture, including appearances by
the Moscow Boys Choir and pianist Olga Kern. Read

Each August the University welcomes freshmen to the
nest, transforming them into Jayhawks even before the
first day of classes. Hawk Week, a 20-year tradition,
teaches students not only where they can do research
or park their cars but also how to sing the KU fight
song and recite the Rock Chalk chant. Read

Chancellor
visits with president, KU graduates in Peru
The oldest university in the Americas honored KU Chancellor
Robert Hemenway this summer in Peru with an honorary
degree, citing his leadership in higher education and
promotion of multicultural literature. The chancellor
also met with Peru President Alejandro Toledo and hosted
a reception for 60 KU alumni. Read

Quantrill leads his infamous raid on Lawrence, sacking
the town and leaving its surviving residents without
financial resources to help support the establishment
of KU.
