Barbecue founder and Boeing engineer receive KU's
highest honor

Richard E. Davis, c'53, m'54, Leawood, and Alan Mulally, e'68, Mercer Island, Wash., are two of four alumni to receive the Distinguished Service Citation, the highest honor given by the University and the Alumni Association. They were honored May 17 during Commencement weekend, along with fellow winners Kenton Keith, c'61, Washington, D.C., and Tensie Oldfather, '64, who were profiled in the May issue of KU Connection. The DSC, which recognizes outstanding professional and civic service, originated in 1941.

Richard Davis

Davis began his career as a child psychiatrist, instructor and author, and he remains a trusted ally to many medical and children's organizations. His academic posts included appointments as professor and acting chairman of the department of psychiatry at Eastern Virginia Medical School, and later, as dean of the School of Medicine at the University of North Dakota. But he is equally well known as the founder of K.C. Masterpiece Barbecue Products Inc., which he now chairs. After his sauce became a national favorite, he founded the successful chain of K.C. Masterpiece Barbecue & Grill Restaurants. To honor his business achievements, the University of Missouri-Kansas City named him Entrepreneur of the Year in 1996. Davis' business savvy is rivaled only by his community service. As an advocate for children, he received the Stop the Violence Coalition's Kindest Kansas Citian Award and the Boys Club of Johnson County's Award for Distinguished Service. To recognize his commitment to health care, the American Diabetes Association named Davis its honorary chairman in 1993, the same year he shared the Salvation Army's William Booth Award with his wife, Coleen.

Alan Mulally

Mulally has led the design and management of pivotal aircraft advances in his 33- year career with The Boeing Co. Most recently, he led the mammoth Boeing 777 project, for which he was honored by Aviation Week & Space Technology magazine. Now president of Boeing Commercial Airlines Group and senior vice president of The Boeing Co., Mulally continues to earn accolades for his mastery of data and design details and their impact on the millions of Americans who travel by air. He has received honors from the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, and he was elected to the U.S. National Academy of Engineering. For the University, he continues to serve as an adviser to engineering students and faculty. He received the School of Engineering's award for distinguished professional service, and he was named to the Aerospace Engineering Honor Roll of outstanding alumni. Mulally, a Lawrence native, is married to Jane Connell Mulally, d'69.
