Sayers' tournament benefits education students

Baby Jay, Gale Sayers, d'75, g'77, and Angela Lumpkin, dean of education, enjoyed a day with faculty and alumni at Sayers' ninth annual golf tournament.

Gale Sayers, KU's two-time All-America tailback from the 1960s who played for the Chicago Bears, and nearly 90 other golfers teed off this month to raise money for the School of Education.

The ninth annual Gale Sayers Benefit Golf Tournament at Lawrence's Alvamar public golf course raised about $15,000 for student scholarships.

Among those playing with Sayers, d'75, g'77, was Bob Skahan, b'68, EdD'79, KU quarterback in the mid-'60s.

Sayers, 58, earned a bachelor's degree in physical education and a master's degree in educational administration from KU. He serves on the School of Education's national advisory board and on the KU Athletic Corp. board. The Omaha native lives in Chicago, where he is president of Sayers Computer Source, which has 10 branches across the country.
