 Indomitable spirit

As the Jayhawks faced the Terrapins in Atlanta March 30, more than 8,000 fans flocked to Memorial Stadium to watch the semifinal game on the giant-screen video scoreboard. Although the 97-88 loss doused late-night celebrations, the crowd stayed to watch Coach Roy Williams' post-game press conference.

Three days later, more than 5,000 faithful returned to the stadium, braving 40-degree temperatures and a gusty north wind, to welcome the team home and thank the players and coaches for a memorable 33-4 season as undefeated conference champions and winners of the NCAA Midwest regional.

Veteran KU broadcasters Bob Davis and Max Falkenstien reminisced about the highlights of the season, including the Jayhawks' crushing 105-73 victory Jan. 28 over Missouri in Allen Field House and the dramatic overtime win at Texas Feb. 1, when the Jayhawks outlasted the Longhorns, 110-103. Chancellor Robert E. Hemenway hailed the players and fans for exemplifying "what it means to be a Jayhawk."
