School
of Engineering makes way for new building
Ground was formally broken March 7 for a massive new neighbor
for Learned Hall that KU administrators hope will unify School
of Engineering's departments. Work began at the site in early
February and is expected to be complete by June 2003.
The four-story structure will be attached to Learned and
will provide almost 50,000 additional square feet. The space
will centralize the department's multiple programs now spread
in various buildings on campus. Building features include
a grand entry, the dean's office suite, a computer commons
and computer classrooms. The Engineering Career Services Center
will move into the new building and will offer seven interview
rooms for use by students and potential employers. An open-air,
circular plaza will connect the new building with Spahr Engineering
Library and Learned Hall.
The $15 million project is being fully funded through private
donations from KU engineering alumni and other school supporters.
Charles and Jane Spahr, of Shaker Heights, Ohio, donated funds
for the building's state-of-the-art lecture hall and included
an endowment to provide technological upgrades for the 230-seat
facility. The classroom will be named in their honor. Charles
Spahr is a 1934 KU civil engineering graduate and the former
president of Standard Oil Co. of Ohio.
